Posted on Dec 12,2016Don’t forget to write down when your lake freezes over in the fall and when the ice goes out in the spring. Publish the yearly results as part of your website.
Ice In, Ice Out dates are important ...
for tracking climate change as indicated in this document
Look for trends
Remember year over year trends are what you want to track, not a one year variation.
More weeds, less oxygen
For your own particular lake a longer ‘ice free’ period may result in increased weed growth as well as oxygen depletion at the bottom of your lake in late summer.
Make it fun
A fun fundraiser might be to have a 50/50 prize for the person who picks the correct ice out date in the spring.
