Before ‘baking’ your plans ensure that you have sought input and feedback about your plans prior to taking action. Not only will you get good comments and suggestions that you didn’t consider, but you will make your members feel valued and make them more receptive to the plans and outcomes. The last thing anyone wants to stomach is a half baked plan.

Biggest Bang

As part of your planning cycle ensure that you look at your existing processes. Which ones are taking a lot of effort from your volunteers? The biggest bang for your buck is to implement online payments for dues, donations, event registrations and more. Not only to eliminate the handling and tracking of cheques and cash but, perhaps even more important, to automate the creation and updates of member, donors, events and finance records.

Christmas Bird Counts

Many of the local Field Naturalist groups are conducting their annual Christmas Bird Counts. Other groups besides Field Naturalist could decide to conduct their own informal Christmas Bird Counts, perhaps as simple as having your members identify and count the birds at their bird feeder on a particular day.
